Printers When Your Business Fails — Thank China

I thought it was time to move off the China subject and go to something else, but there have been a rash of comments on this site and on my printing groups on LinkedIn that I’m going to post another China related blog in an attempt to address those other concerns.

Are American families, homes, and jobs worth defending?

Sometimes I can’t believe my ears. What has happened to America? Americans used to fight for their rights, but now our fight begins by laying down our guns. Our motto seems to be “why try; it won’t do any good anyway.”

Chinese printers market their low ball prices in the United States aided by two main things:

  • Their costs are one-tenth of ours. How did I arrive at that figure? It was easy; I know how much minimum wage is in the US. Remember this wage is mandated by the government. Employers have to pay it. They also have to pay matching Social Security, so the real figure is much higher. I also read an article in Reuters that discussed how much the average factory worker earns in China. Without matching Social Security, they earn 1/10th.  Suppose you are a Chinese printer marketing to the US, how difficult would it be to come in at half the price when your labor costs are less than 1/10th? Who is making the real money here? The Chinese workers? Ha!
  • China plays hardball when it comes to International Trade. They are members of the WTO, but you don’t have to look far to see filing, after filing, after filings of Chinese trade violations for anti-dumping and anti-subsidies. Some states have a three times you are out law to penalize career criminals. If we held China up to this same standard they would right now be serving several consecutive lifetime sentences. They can import some products to the US for 2-5% duties. We, on the other hand, have to pay some 24% to sell there. It is wrong, it isn’t fair, and it is killing the US economy.

Since our government won’t help, and the business elite are benefiting from cozy relationships with foreign countries, there is only one thing left to “we the people,” and that is our collective buying power. If enough of us refuse to buy Chinese, Pakistani, Indian, Mexican, or any other products made from cheap labor we can turn the tide.

Some say that it is unfair to blame these countries because it is the American consumer who really controls the prices. Of course I want low prices, but not at the expense of putting myself or my neighbors out of work. I don’t know about everyone else, but if presented with two identical items and one is made in the US and the other in China I would rather buy American, even if it was a little more. I would not choose Chinese industry over American.

What about the automobile business, didn’t the Japanese do the same thing? No — they didn’t. They didn’t compete solely on price, although they used price at first to get our attention. What they did is build a better vehicle than the crap being pumped out by Detroit. I hate it that we lost this giant industry to foreign competition, but we deserved to lose it. Not because of the workers but because of the fat cats at the top who left the office every day counting their lavish bonuses while steadily guiding their companies into bankruptcy. Bonuses for bad leadership — whoever thought that was a good idea?

We are experiencing a 10% unemployment rate in the United States right now, primarily because of a few bankers who used vast lobbying power to influence congress. Our government systematically deregulated the banking and financial institutions until we got chaos. Those who believe in free markets, take note, without some control everything goes to hell, quickly.

There is an axis of evil to coin a phrase from George W. Bush. Americans are being crushed economically by Wall Street Bankers, the US Congress, the Insurance industry, and unfair foreign competition. Until these four entities are brought to task it is going to do nothing but get worse. Do you hate 10% unemployment, reduced wages, and increased working hours? That is just a start. Over the next few decades we will see 25% unemployment, salaries cut to the bone, and typical working days of 16 hours. Once Wall Street has us where they want us, poor, starving, and desperate we will be competitive with China, because we will be reduced to their level. Welcome to the new America, the one world government, the one fashioned by the true axis of evil.

Talk about hitting the nail directly on the head. I have been preaching this for some time now. Unfortunately, some people are just starting to get it and others don’t seem to get it at all. It doesn’t matter China doesn’t have to abide by the same rules and regulations we in America are required to follow. Heck, it is okay that they put lead in their product. That their way of making things is poisoning our people. It may not be as healthy for us, but it sure does save me a whole lot of money. America will be fine. Everyone else can buy American….save our country. I am going to buy cheap and save money. If we keep this up, we had better learn to speak Chinese. JUST MAKES ME SICK. I served my country back when Ronald Reagan was President (GOD BLESS). I was proud to serve under him. I would have given my life in a heartbeat for him and our Constitution and American ways and values. All of this is now LOST! We have a president (yes, I know I did not capitalize president)who bows to other leaders. Apologizes for us arrogant American’s. Until WE THE PEOPLE boot out these people running, or should I say “ruining”, our country, it isn’t going to get any better. Only worse. I think you will see the “changes you can believe in” he spoke of coming in November, and then again in 2012! GOD, PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON AMERICA UNTIL THEN. November cannot arrive fast enough. As Donald Trump would say “YOU’RE FIRED”!

I agree with much of what you are saying Bill. But the real villians are USA corporate management. They have systematically dismantled our production expertise and shipped it off to China and India with the full knowledge and support of the US Government. This did not just start now. It has been in process for the past 30 years. Every single government we elect, be they Republican or Democrat, has continued and accelerated the process started back in the Nixon era. Who is to blame? We are every time we step inside a Walmart, every time we open a book and do not check where it was printed before we buy, every time we insist on getting the best possible ‘deal’ without considering how many Americans will be put out of work because we wanted to save $1 on the purchase price of an appliance. Shame on us.

Great post Bill. I completely agree and buy American when I have the option. I too have been talking about unfair trade practices. Bringing goods into our country to sell to Americans should have higher tariffs.

Weird rant David. Didn’t you leave out a few presidents between Reagan and President Obama? 1 year and it’s all his fault. Hmmm.

If Americans stop buying Chinese then the Chinese won’t have the money to loan the U.S. to help finance the budget deficit, keep prices and interest rates low in the United States, and to finance big tax cuts.

American consumers are as dependent on imports of manufactured goods from China as they are on imported oil. In addition, the profits of U.S. brand name companies are dependent on the sale to Americans of the products that they make in China. The U.S. cannot, in retaliation, block the import of goods and services from China without delivering a knock-out punch to U.S. companies and U.S. consumers. China has many markets and can afford to lose the U.S. market easier than the U.S. can afford to lose the American brand names on store shelves that are made in China.

As far as printing is concerned, maybe a page can be taken from auto manufacturing history – if you want to sell here then you need to manufacture here. Maybe that would have Chinese printers set up printshops in the U.S. in the same way that Honda, and Toyota had to set up manufacturing plants in the U.S.

This message is for DAVE FAIL, not for Bill Ruesch. This mess with China has been going for years now. The current president is not to blame for almost twenty years of ultra-conservatism and business elite nurturing. Clinton was a moderate not a Liberal. So before you go waving the flag, remember who fired the air traffic controllers, helped break the unions and so on. Republicans like Bush senior helped pave the way for our dimise with NAFTA. This the main reason why we are where we are today. By the way I am not a Liberal, I voted for McCain, but I think we would be in worse shape if he won. We need radical change the Republicans aren’t going to deliver this. They will just help the rich get richer.

    Interesting auto analogy update…

Korean car maker Hyundai will build its 2011 Kia Sorento in West Point Georgia.

Chinese automaker BYD, which is backed by American Warren Buffet, plans to open up a US car production plant should sales of their electric car – produced in a joint venture with Germany’s auto giant Daimler – prove successful.

So, in the case of BYD, not buying Chinese would mean not buying American.

    It’s a strange world.
