Exactly. Vanity publishers have co-opted the word self-publishing into "self-publishing companies" and POD to mean the same thing. Many booksellers will not handle a POD book --unless they don't know it's a POD book. Barbara Hudgins, author, Crafting the Travel Guidebook.

As the owner of a digital printing company, when vanity publishing companies started using the POD acronym, I was a little perturbed for the reasons you have stated above. The term POD (usually sounded out - P. O. D.) was created to change the image of the Vanity presses and also describes more than just the printing part of publishing. Generally speaking, POD publishing companies put an author's book into the Ingram's wholesale system, assign an ISBN number, then place the book on Amazon, B&N and other online book stores. As orders come in they print books one at a time. The printing is usually done by Lightning Source which is owned by Ingrams. Lately, Amazon has started competing directly with Ingrams with its own digital printing company BookSurge, and I believe they distribute books through the Baker &Taylor wholesale system.

Changing the name from vanity publishing to POD has done little to improve the industry. Now POD has just as negative connotation as vanity publishing. The way to change the image is to begin helping authors publish bookstore quality books. iUniverse, Outskirts and some other companies are doing a better job these days and my prediction is that as more and more quality books make it through the system, the reputation will improve.

And then we can just call it publishing again.

My problem is I am a technical writer by trade so it can be a tough to go home at night and WRITE MORE (GRIN).
